Single Bearings

Single reel bearings in three classes: Apex, Edge and Core. For one worn bearing, an odd size or a reel our sets do not cover yet.

Fit

Two bearings carry your spool.

Where they sit

1 2 Spool

One bearing at each end of the spool shaft. Depending on the reel they sit on the shaft, in the side plate or in the cast control cap. The two sizes can differ.

Guide

How to pick a single reel bearing

A baitcasting spool runs on two bearings. If both are due, a matched spool bearing set is the easier way: you type your reel and get the right pair. Single bearings are for everything else: one bearing that has started to scratch, a size outside the common pairs, or a position away from the spool.

Three classes, one question: what do you throw?

  • Apex is the ceramic speed class. It needs the least force to start spinning, which is what light lures are short of. Our pick for finesse and everything up to medium lures.
  • Edge is the hybrid ceramic all-rounder, open or shielded. Close to Apex in free spin, tougher in daily use. The right call if one reel has to do everything.
  • Core is stainless steel and built to take a beating. Big baits, heavy loads, dirty water. Speed matters less here than a bearing that keeps running.

Size comes first

A bearing size reads inner diameter x outer diameter x width in millimetres, for example 3x10x4. The class is your choice, the size is not: it has to match the seat in your reel exactly. If you do not know your sizes, the bearing finder lists them by reel.

What a new bearing can and cannot do

A fresh spool bearing gives you a longer free spin and an easier start of the spool. With light lures you feel that on the first cast. It does not raise what your reel can handle: the upper limit is still set by the reel itself.

FAQ

Questions about single bearings

How do I find the right bearing size for my reel?

Type your reel into the bearing finder. It shows the spool bearing sizes for your model. If you already have the old bearing out, measure inner diameter, outer diameter and width in millimetres.

What is the difference between Apex, Edge and Core?

Apex is the ceramic speed class for maximum performance with light to medium lures. Edge is the hybrid ceramic all-rounder between performance and durability. Core is stainless steel, very robust and the choice for big baits.

Should I replace one spool bearing or both?

Both, if you can. The spool only spins as freely as its slower bearing. A single bearing makes sense when only one is damaged or the two seats take different sizes.

Open or shielded: which Edge bearing should I take?

Open bearings spin a little freer and are easy to clean and oil. Shielded bearings keep dirt out better. For clean water and regular care take open, for rough conditions shielded.

Do new bearings need oil?

Apex and Edge run best with one small drop of thin oil. Core bearings come greased and need nothing. You find the matching oils under reel oil.
